B-52

A visually striking and famously delicious layered shooter, the B-52 is a party classic. This recipe creates three distinct, floating layers of coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and orange liqueur for a shot that's as impressive to look at as it is to drink.

Ingredients

  • ⅓ oz Coffee Liqueur (Kahlúa)
  • ⅓ oz Irish Cream Liqueur (Baileys)
  • ⅓ oz Orange Liqueur (Grand Marnier)

Instructions

  1. Pour the Base Layer: Carefully pour the coffee liqueur into the bottom of a shot glass.
  2. Layer the Irish Cream: Hold a bar spoon upside down just inside the rim of the glass, close to the surface of the first layer. Very slowly, pour the Irish cream over the back of the spoon. This will disperse the liquid and allow it to float on top of the denser coffee liqueur.
  3. Layer the Orange Liqueur: Using the same technique, slowly pour the orange liqueur over the back of the spoon to create the third and final layer.
  4. Serve: Serve immediately, to be drunk in one go to experience all three layers.

Pro Tips for Perfection

The Secret is Density: Layering works because each liqueur has a different specific gravity. The Kahlúa is the heaviest and sinks, followed by the slightly lighter Baileys, and finally the lightest Grand Marnier on top. The key is to pour slowly and gently.

The Flaming B-52: A popular variation involves floating a small amount of high-proof rum (like Bacardi 151) on top of the Grand Marnier and carefully setting it alight. If attempting this, use a sturdy, heat-proof shot glass and exercise extreme caution. Extinguish the flame before drinking.
