Between the Sheets

A playful and potent classic from the Prohibition era, the Between the Sheets is essentially a Sidecar with a split base of Cognac and light rum. This addition creates a more complex and layered sour that is both sophisticated and alluring.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Cognac
  • 1 oz Light Rum
  • 1 oz Cointreau
  • ¾ oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Garnish: Flamed Orange Peel

Instructions

  1. Chill Your Glass: Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer to ensure it's properly chilled.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add the Cognac, light rum, Cointreau, and fresh lemon juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  3. Shake Vigorously: Seal the shaker and shake hard for about 15 seconds until the outside is frosty and ice-cold.
  4. Strain and Serve: Double-strain the cocktail into your chilled coupe glass to remove any ice shards.
  5. Garnish: Garnish with a flamed orange peel for a dramatic presentation and a beautiful burnt citrus aroma.

Pro Tips for Perfection

A Sidecar with a Twist: At its heart, this drink is a Sidecar (brandy, orange liqueur, lemon) that splits the base spirit with rum. This simple addition makes it a fantastic way to explore how different base spirits can interact and create a more complex flavor profile.

Quality Liqueurs: Using a high-quality orange liqueur like Cointreau is crucial for a balanced drink, providing a clean, bright orange flavor. Likewise, a VS or VSOP Cognac and a good quality light rum will ensure the spirit backbone is smooth and flavorful, not harsh.
