Champagne Cocktail

A timeless classic that adds a touch of ceremony to any occasion. The Champagne Cocktail is a simple yet sophisticated drink, where a bitters-soaked sugar cube at the bottom of the glass creates a continuous stream of bubbles, enhancing both the flavor and the visual appeal.

Ingredients

  • 1 Sugar Cube
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 oz Cognac (optional)
  • 4 oz Brut Champagne, chilled
  • Garnish: Lemon Twist

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Glass: Place the sugar cube in the bottom of a chilled Champagne flute.
  2. Soak the Cube: Dash the Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar cube, allowing it to soak in completely.
  3. Add Cognac: If using, pour the Cognac over the soaked sugar cube.
  4. Top with Champagne: Slowly and gently top with the chilled Champagne. Pouring at an angle helps preserve the carbonation.
  5. Garnish: Express the oils from a fresh lemon twist over the surface of the drink for a burst of citrus aroma, then drop it in.

Pro Tips for Perfection

The Sugar Cube's Role: The sugar cube does more than just sweeten the drink; as it slowly dissolves, it creates a nucleation point for the carbon dioxide, resulting in a beautiful, continuous stream of bubbles that enhances the sensory experience.

Use Dry Champagne: It is essential to use a "Brut" (dry) Champagne or sparkling wine. The sugar cube already provides sweetness, and using a sweeter sparkling wine (like Asti) would make the cocktail unbalanced and cloying. A dry Cava or Prosecco are excellent alternatives.
