Fernandito

Known simply as "Fernet con Coca," the Fernandito is the unofficial national drink of Argentina. It's a bold, bracing, and uniquely refreshing highball that combines the intensely bitter and herbal notes of Fernet-Branca with the sweet caramel of Coca-Cola.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Fernet-Branca
  • 4-6 oz Coca-Cola, chilled
  • Garnish: Lemon or Orange Peel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Fill the Glass with Ice: Fill a tall highball or Collins glass completely to the top with ice.
  2. Add Fernet-Branca: Pour the Fernet-Branca over the ice.
  3. Top with Coca-Cola: Slowly pour the chilled Coca-Cola into the glass. The mixture will create a substantial foamy head.
  4. Stir Gently and Serve: Give the drink a single, gentle stir to combine. Garnish with a citrus peel if you like, and serve.

Pro Tips for Perfection

Embrace the Bitter: Fernet-Branca is a deeply bitter, mentholated, and herbal amaro. It's an acquired taste for many, but its pairing with Coca-Cola is a classic for a reason. The cola's sweetness and spice perfectly balance the Fernet's intensity.

The Ratio is Personal: While a 1:3 ratio of Fernet to Coke is a great starting point, Argentinians often adjust it to their preference. Some prefer a 50/50 mix for a truly powerful drink, while others lean towards a 1:4 ratio for a more subdued flavor.
