Singapore Sling

A legendary tropical long drink from the turn of the 20th century, the Singapore Sling is a complex and fruity gin cocktail with a storied history. This recipe is based on the version served today at its birthplace, the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Gin
  • ½ oz Cherry Liqueur (Cherry Heering)
  • ¼ oz Cointreau
  • ¼ oz Bénédictine D.O.M.
  • 3 oz Pineapple Juice
  • ½ oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1 dash Angostura Bitters
  • Top with Club Soda

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Add the gin, cherry liqueur, Cointreau, Bénédictine, pineapple juice, lime juice, and bitters to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 12-15 seconds until the outside is well-chilled.
  3. Strain and Top: Strain the mixture into a tall Collins or sling glass filled with fresh ice.
  4. Finish: Top with a splash of chilled club soda and garnish with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry.

Pro Tips for Perfection

Don't Skip the Liqueurs: The complex, herbal notes of Bénédictine and the rich, sweet flavor of Cherry Heering are what make a Singapore Sling unique. While the ingredient list is long, these two components are essential for an authentic taste.

Fresh Juice is Crucial: With so many bold liqueurs, the bright acidity of fresh pineapple and lime juice is critical for balance. Avoid canned or bottled juices if possible, as they will make the drink overly sweet and one-dimensional.
