Tommy's Margarita
Created in the early 1990s at Tommy's Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco, this modern classic has become the bartender's choice for a Margarita. It strips the original recipe down to its core, removing the orange liqueur and using agave nectar to create a purer, more tequila-forward experience.
Ingredients
- 2 oz 100% Agave Tequila Blanco
- 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
- ½ oz Agave Nectar
- Garnish: Lime Wedge
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: Pour the tequila, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar into a cocktail shaker.
- Shake with Ice: Fill the shaker with plenty of ice, seal it, and shake hard for about 15 seconds until the shaker is frosty cold.
- Strain and Serve: Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. A salt rim is optional but generally omitted for a Tommy's.
- Garnish: Garnish with a fresh lime wedge and serve immediately.
Pro Tips for Perfection
Use Quality Tequila: Because this recipe has only three ingredients, the quality of your tequila is paramount. Always use a 100% blue weber agave tequila. The absence of orange liqueur allows the bright, earthy, and citrus notes of a good blanco tequila to shine through brilliantly.
Adjusting Agave: Agave nectar can be intensely sweet. It's often best to create an "agave syrup" by mixing two parts agave nectar with one part water. This makes it easier to pour and measure, and gives you more control over the drink's final balance. Start with a little less and adjust to your personal preference.
